CLEANING TECHNIQUES FOR ALPACA FUR RUGS
Alpaca fiber is stronger, softer, lighter, and warmer
than both merino wool and cashmere. Known for its luxurious softness, alpaca fleece won’t scratch or irritate the skin like wool. It’s also hypoallergenic, as it lacks the lanolin and natural oils found in sheep’s wool that can trigger sensitivities in those with skin conditions.
Maintain the beauty of your alpaca fur rug
it’s essential to use proper cleaning techniques that preserve its integrity. Regular care is key to keeping it looking pristine.
HOW TO CLEAN ALPACA FUR STEP BY STEP
- Vacuum regularly using a brush attachment:
To remove the dust, only brush softly the garment with a pet brush. So, the hair will be fluffier and softer. Use a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. - Do not use chemical cleaners: Gently wash in warm water with a mild soap ( like baby shampoo or a fine fibers formula.) Skip the stuff with lots of fragrance or conditioners added and thoroughly rinse in water of the same temperature. Wash the rug once every six months.
- Avoid direct sunlight:
Soak the garment for 3 to 5 minutes, gently squeezing the suds through the garment and lay it on a dry towel and roll up (never wring or twist). Leave it in the towel for about 5 minutes. Transfer to a dry towel and let air dry on a flat surface. - If necessary, spot treat stains with a solution of vinegar and water.
- Store away from heat sources.
- Do not store near radiators or air conditioners.
- Do not leave wet rugs unattended.
*Whatever you do, don’t use Woolite!
*For items like our fur rugs and cushions, you may prefer to get your fur/fleece product professionally cleaned by a furrier or fur cleaning specialist.

HOW TO STORE ALPACA GARMENTS AND AVOID MOTHS
- To avoid moth infestation we recommend using a sealed cedar chest, closed bag, or another moth protected environment for the ultimate security of your heirloom alpaca item.
- A shirt box, clean pillow case, clean paper bag, or cardboard box will keep the air circulating around the garment.
- A small bag with cinnamon sticks and clove will leave your alpaca fur with fresh smell.
- Never use plastic or dry cleaning bags for your alpaca, as this will cause moisture to build up and the fibers will felt.
- Store your fur in a very cold environment, but not in a freezer. Moths die when the temperature goes below 8º.
